hexa-=six表示“六”，源于古希腊语，six源于古英语的sex，e异化为i，sex（性别）恰好是分开男女之后才有的概念，本义是“区分，分开”，而six恰好是十二进制的一半，也和“分开”有关。

sept-=seven表示“七”，源自拉丁语，seven源于古英语。September[səp'tembə]n.九月，是怎么回事呢？古罗马皇帝朱里斯·凯撒（Julius Caesar）之前的历法以March（三月） 为第一个月，共十个月，September是第七个月，后来改革历法，加上了一月（January）和二月（February）成了十二个月，但原来的月份名称未变， 依次往后顺延两个月，这样September ，October，November和December分别是旧历法中的七月，八月，九月和十月，现在就成了九月，十月，十一月，十二月。
