Lesson 127 A famous actress

Can you recognize that woman, Liz?

I think I can, Kate. It must be Karen Marsh, the actress.

I thought so. Who’s that beside her?

That must be Conrad Reeves.

Conrad Reeves, the actor? It can’t be. Let me have another look. I think you’re right! Isn’t he her third husband?

No. He must be her fourth or fifth.

Doesn’t Karen Marsh look old!

She does, doesn’t she! I read she’s twenty-nine, but she must be at least forty.

I’m sure she is.

She was a famous actress when I was still at school.

That was a long time ago, wasn’t it?

Not that long ago! I’m not more than twenty-nine myself.

本课开始学习情态动词must与can't表猜测的用法，本课侧重的是must与can't表对现在的状态和动作的猜测。

一、must

must表肯定猜测，意思是“一定；肯定”，其基本用法为：

状态：主语+must+be+形容词/名词/短语

动作：主语+must+be doing

如：

He must be tired.

He must be a teacher.

He must be at home now.

He must be sleeping at home now.

二、can't

can't表否定猜测，意思是“一定不；肯定不”，其基本用法为：

状态：主语+can't+be+形容词/名词/短语

动作：主语+can't+be doing

如：

He can't be tired.

He can' tbe a teacher.

He can't be at home now.

He can't be sleeping at home now.

【注意】

肯定形式的can也可以表猜测，如：

Exercising alone can be boring.

独自锻炼会很没劲。

Coral can be yellow, blue, or green.

珊瑚可能是黄色、蓝色或绿色。

Not that long ago! I'm not more than twenty-nine myself.

注意第一句话中的that在教材中是用斜体标示出来的，这是因为这个that在实际交际中是要重读的。

这里的说话者Liz是位女性，所以当Kate说到Liz读书时就知道Karen Marsh，那应该是很久以前的事情了，这就意味着Liz年龄也应该不小了；作为女性，大多是不愿承认自己年龄大了，所以Liz刻意重读that，用以强调其实也没那么长时间以前，然后还接着补充说自己还不到29岁呢，就是想告诉别人自己还挺年轻的：）
