When: January 3, 1961
What: The U.S. closed its embassy in Havana, and severed diplomatic relations with Cuba
Why significant: Severing relations came after Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled Cuba. It marked the end of America’s policy of trying to resolve its differences with Castro’s government through diplomacy. It signaled that the United States was prepared to take extreme measures to oppose Castro’s regime, which U.S. officials worried was a beachhead of communism in the western hemisphere.
After Castro nationalized American-owned property, allied himself with the Communist Party, and grew friendlier with the Soviet Union, the U.S also severed economic ties with Cuba and enacted a trade and travel embargo that remained effective until 2015. In April 1961, the U.S. launched the Bay of Pigs invasion, an unsuccessful attempt to remove Castro from power.
