Liang Xiaosheng

Liang Xiaosheng began his literary writing in the 1980s and to this day he still refuses to use a computer to write, insisting on writing everything by hand. In 2018, Liang Xiaosheng published a 1.15-million-word novel titled The Human World. The novel depicts the Zhou family sparing no effort in upholding traditional Chinese ethics. Each member of the family, despite different personalities and distinctive education backgrounds, shows a strong cultural awareness. He has always stood by the common people and taken a perceptive observation of their life, demonstrating the struggles and hard work of grassroots youth. The novel not only presents the “glory and dream” of the development of Chinese society, but also reflects the difficulties and complexities of the reform and opening up process, known as “The life History of the Ordinary Chinese People over 50 years”.
Liang Xiaosheng first appeared in the literary scene as one of “educated youth writers”. His educated youth novel Educated Youth displayed the perplexities in their pain, their contemplations in perplexities, and their convictions after contemplations on themselves and their own experiences, all of which were unique to young people in a special era. He is therefore also a typical representative of educated youth literature featuring a youth without regret”. The novels The World’s Life and Father manifest his mild plebeian style. When China embarked on the road to modernization and the society began to transform, literature elitism gradually moved to the edge, giving way to the literature secularization. While focusing on the living conditions of the group of educated youth, he cast his eyes on people at the bottom rungs of society. Unlike other writers who sought out the inherent weaknesses of the citizens, Liang Xiaosheng set out from the standpoint of ordinary people to describe their daily life and reveal the bright side of their hearts. As a university professor, he often sets up cultural forums for young students. He is a life mentor for young people, commenting often on social issues and is known as a “spokesperson of the civilians”.
Liang Xiaosheng believes that a real writer cannot write for the sake of pleasing his readers. His works, which contain more than 10 million Chinese characters, show that he is a highly productive writer among contemporary writers. His creative style can be summarized as the heroic style of realism, the “common people” style of realism, and the parable style of realism. He is considered the spokesperson for the ordinary people. Through his works, one is able to see the ups and downs of people at the bottom of society, their pursuits and disillusionments, their dedication and helplessness, and the anger and sense of rebellion they had borne through being unknown.
Liang Xiaosheng, male, formerly known as Liang Shaosheng, was born in Harbin in September 1949, with his ancestral home in Hot Spring Village, Bo Yu Town, Rongcheng City, Shandong Province. After graduating from high school, he was sent to the Great Northern Wilderness in the northeastern part of the country as an educated youth in 1968, where he has worked as a farm worker for seven years in the first division of the Heilongjiang Production and Construction Corps. As he was good at writing, he was approved to sign in literary creation training class for the entire Corps. In 1974, he was accepted to Fudan University specializing in literary creation in the Department of Chinese on the strong recommendation of his working unit for his early publication of his novel Guide, when Fudan University came to the Corps for student enrollment. In 1977, he worked as an editor and screenwriter in Beijing Film Studio and formally began his literary creation. His experiences as an educated youth were an inspiration and a source of literary creation for him. He wrote a series of masterpieces, with the theme of educated youth living in the Great Northern Wilderness, such as This is a Miraculous Land, The Snowstorm Tonight, Snow City and so on Since 2002, he has been a professor at the Chinese Language Department of Beijing Language and Culture University.
