While reports of hurricanes were limited to being sent from where they were occurring the Great Storm’s progress was largely guessed at since there were no weather satellites to track its course and many ships had yet to be equipped with wireless radio.  However, preparation for such storms was also limited as many people could not go far and “would hunker in place.”

Why

significant

The hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas is the deadliest natural disaster in US history leaving somewhere between 6000 and 12000 dead and over 30,000 people homeless.
