做你热爱的事情。

考泊尔：60、70、80年代在纽约有一位非常著名的广播电台记者，他的名字叫Danny Meenan。他是爱尔兰老记者的典范。我当时大约22岁，刚从研究生院毕业，到WMCA做见习编辑的工作，Danny也在那儿。见习编辑名称挺好听，但实际上干的是跑腿的活，别人让你干啥就干啥。Danny是一位乐于助人的导师。他知道我想成为一名记者，所以几次接到外出任务时都带着我一起。

此后不久，我们经常去一家酒吧，一块儿喝几杯啤酒。Danny有一次问我：“你今后想干什么？”我说：“我想从政，也许有一天我会成为一名国会议员。”他看着我，就好像我说了或做了什么大不敬的事情一样。他说：“你会成为一个糟糕的国会议员，但你看上去像是会成为一名非常优秀的记者。当记者要比当国会议员有趣多了。你应该做你擅长做的工作，做你热爱做的工作。而在我看来，你热爱新闻工作。”

这项工作我一干就是四十年。

Do what you love.

Koppel: There was a very famous radio reporter in New York City in 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. His name was DannyMeenan, and he was the quintessential old Irish reporter. I was about 22, just out of graduate school, and had gone to work at WMCA, where Danny worked, with the exalted title of copy boy.  Being a copy boy meant you did what anybody else on the staff wanted you to do. Danny was a very generous mentor. He knew I wanted to be a reporter. He took me on a couple of assignments with him.

Shortly thereafter, he and I repaired to a bar and had a couple of beers together, and Danny said, “What do you want to do with your life?” I said, “I think I want to go into politics. I might want to be a Congressman someday.” He looked at me as if I had just said or done something obscene. He said, “You would be a lousy Congressman. And it looks as though you are going to be a pretty good reporter. You will have much more fun being a reporter than being a Congressman. And you should do what you’re good at, and do what you love. And you look to me that you are loving journalism.”

It’s what I’ve been doing for the last 40 years.
