我20岁时,刚刚得到一份真正的工作,在法兰克福一家发行量很大的晚报当外事和外经贸编辑。刚刚3个月时,我收到了对我一生中最重要的教诲。我带着我最初写的两篇社论去见总编,一个德国人。他只看了一眼,就将稿子扔回给我,说:“一塌糊涂。” 在我工作了三周之后,他叫我去他的办公室并对我说:“德鲁克,如果今后的三周里你再没有大的进步,最好另谋高就吧。”
对我来说,这种做法没什么不对的。他没想教导我,这会被认为是个荒唐的想法。教导是二战后的事儿。那个时候(二战前),你被雇来就是干活的,活干不好,走人,就这么简单。
Get good, or get out.
Drucker: The most important instruction I received was when I was just 20 and three weeks into my first real job as a foreign affair and business editor of the large-circulation afternoon paper in Frankfurt. I brought my first two editorials to the editor-in-chief, a German. He took one look at them and threw them back at me saying, “They are no good at all.” After I’d been on the job for three weeks, he called me in and said, “Drucker, if you don’t improve radically in the next three weeks, you’d better look for another job.”
For me, that was the right treatment. He did not try to mentor me. The idea would have been considered absurd. The idea of mentoring was post-World War Two. In those days [before World War Two] you were hired to do your job, and if you didn’t do it, you were out. It was very simple.
