Chen Yingsong

Chen Yingsong was born in Huangjinkou in Gong’an County of Hubei Province. He graduated from the Chinese Department of Wuhan University. He was transfered to the countryside after graduating from high school in 1973, and began studying writing. His published works include the full-length novels Returning Ghosts, Mount Hunter, Harvest at the Ends of the Earth, Unhinged, and Village of Aphasia, along with over 70 other works of short story collections, essay collections, and poetry collections, as well as The Collective Works of Chen Yingsong (10 volumes) and The Chen Yingsong Shennongjia Series Novels (2 volumes). His novels have won the Third Annual Lu Xun Literary Prize, the Second Annual Chinese Fiction Institution Award, the journal Selected Fictions’ Novels Award, the Liang Bin Literature Prize, and the Chinese Language Achievement Award (Canada). In 2015 he was named a “Famous Cultural Figure of Hubei Province” by the Hubei Provincial Government. He became a representative writer of new century “bottom strata literature” due to his “Shennongjia Series” of novels, A Murder in Masiling, Tranquil Dog, and Mother. Many of his works have been translated and published in English, French, Russian, Polish, Romanian, Japanese, and Korean. His medium-length novels had once been on the list of the Chinese Fiction Institution’s “Top List of Chinese Novels” for seven years. Chen Yingsong is now a member of the general committee of the China Writers Association, and Vice Chairman of the Hubei Writers Association.

Assessing Chen Yingsong, Mo Yan, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, said: “He uses extremely individualized language to create a magnificent artistic world brimming with nightmares and delusions. This world is built on the Shennongjia mountainous area, yet also surpasses it. This is his kingdom, and is also a highlight in the domain of Chinese  literature.” Chen Yingsong’s Shennongjia novel series is unique in the Chinese literary world. It subdues readers with its intense experience of life, surreal imagination, literary fantasy form, bizarre style, peculiar artistic conception, horrifying stories, and shocking artistic .

The full-length novel Mount Hunter in the Shennongjia series depicts the legendary experience of the ups and downs, twists and turns, ignoble existence, and death of the revived family of the old hunter Bai Xiu during changing generations and in the brutal fight of man with nature, with the unique outlook on life and worldview sincerely believed among the people living in the Shennongjia mountainous area that “in one out of the two twelve hour periods in a day, a person is draught animal, while the remaining time is as a human.”

A Murder in Masiling is a medium length novel that created quite a stir. The work tells the tale of two honest peasant porters, who kill seven members of a site survey team without a break. The shocking murder that occurs in the Shennongjia mountain region is stripped apart layer by layer and meticulously narrated, revealing how poverty and greed distort kind-hearted human natures, and consequently sets them down a bloodthirsty path in which there is no return. The novel’s narrative is profoundly meaningful, precise, realistic, brutal, and contemplates the fight, struggle, and turmoil of good and evil in the depths of human nature. Masiling’s atmosphere of forces of evil strengthens the tragic elements of the story due to embellishments of symbolism and fantasy.

Returning Ghosts is a story with poignant features of the witchcraft created in ancient Chu State. Mysterious and strange transforming images and short and powerful poetic language together form a novel with strong magical features, which reflects on the social problems and the unmentionable spiritual diseases brought about by the speeding up of the process of societal modernization. With its unconventional imagination, plentiful imagery, eccentric sense of language, and sagacious unruliness, the entire text overflows with the heterogenous elements that the novel depicts. Critics have called it “the first true poetic novel in the new era of China” on account of its musical and poetic-like textual impact.
