When: December 14, 1799
What: First U.S. President George Washington died at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia
Why significant: Mount Vernon was one of the many estates owned by George Washington, who was a major landholder and promoter of western settlement. He himself made several several long journeys into the West in his lifetime, and he invested in western lands and worked to politically and commercially link the west with the eastern seaboard. When he became the first president of the United States, Washington strongly endorsed the idea that the young nation must expand westward and settle the Trans-Appalachian regions of the Ohio and Mississippi valleys.
Washington's recognition of the promise of the West had a profound influence on the U.S., and predicted the rapid expansion of American borders westwards that would occur during the next century. George Washington not only won independence and founded a nation, but he also saw the path of its destiny and worked effectively to promote its progress therein.
