Walk This Way

Vincent Yuan

Thesis Advisor: Anna Neimark

Website: architecturethesis.com

There is this large parking lot in the suburb of Rosemead, California. From the air, the lot sits abandoned, sealed off from the main road, dusty and empty. On the ground, the smell of hot pavement wafts over the neighboring homes. Situated in one of the first suburban Chinatowns, this site belongs to the Kizh people and is layered with histories of extraction: first the Spanish colonial missions, followed by the American expansion of the western front, and most recently the 20th century explosion of suburban sprawl. These histories all sit underneath the warm pavement of the lot. This project patches together an understanding for another community centre in Rosemead, California.
“Walk This Way” argues that community is a series of relationships that cannot be contained by a building or program. It is the collection parts that come together and share a common ground. To propose a community centre in what seemingly is today a generic suburban parking lot is to re-consider the ways we can build community. This thesis aims to care and comfort the bodies which share the same ground. Through this care in building with different styles and many grounds, through embracing its seams of the collage and the intersectionalities of its bodies, we destabilize the process and the need to assimilate into this country. It is a site for collective action not americanization. It is a town hall, a gathering place for a family potluck, and a pool to float in.

Phygital Supermarket

Xin Liu + Yuting Zhu

Thesis Advisor: Peter Testa, Devyn Weiser

Behance: https://www.behance.net/gallery/104798473/Phygital-Supermarket-Worlds

(Digital)

《Phygital

Phygital Supermarket Worlds is an experimental art film designed and directed by Xin Liu and Yuting Zhu. It’s the third episode of the Phygital Supermarket Trilogy.

By merging digital techniques and physical objects in playful and unexpected ways, Phygital Supermarket explores the possibilities of interactive architectural form and challenges the legibility and representation of everyday objects. The convergence of digital and physical occurs in both geometrical and textural levels, as well as, in the architectural levels, and cinematic levels throughout the representation of the project. An object is able to be digitally "animated" while keeping the illusion of tactility. The same kit of object assets taken from the supermarket are re-combined, re-represented, and reinterpreted in different ways to compose five distinct worlds — Snack Bar, Farm, Warehouse, Food Store, and Cafe — around the supermarket ecology.

Phygital Supermarket Worlds defamiliarizes our relationship with everyday stuff and disintegrates objects and their representation in novel ways.

The Z Object

kumaran Parthiban

Thesis Advisor: Elena Manferdini

Swipe, tag, like, forward, scroll; infinity, public and unvetted. These are the defining behaviors and gestures that are enabled by the internet, social media, and technological advancements in the age of Gen Z. Especially with the pandemic in place, everyone is forced to behave like the Z generation, connected at all times through the various digital platforms while remaining within the confines of our domestic spaces. Additionally, what we call “Home” is no longer emblematic of solely domesticity, but also of work, play, interaction, and creation. The home was the typology in which we had privacy, intimacy, and was emblematic of one’s subject. It now encompasses the entirety of our lives. The exterior which was the superficial symbol of the inhabitant's identity is no longer what is visible, rather the interior is.

This thesis takes “life at home” as an optimistic departure from the physical world to create an extended digital construct within the walls of our domestic spaces through the gestural medium of virtual reality by the creation of The Z Objects.

The Z Objects are digital assets that one owns, which is personalized and customized to each individual or group of people. This is made possible by moving away from our 2D touch screen to a more humane three-dimensional gestural space of virtual reality. Where we can better represent ourselves through phygital materials and both objects from our physical and digital worlds which together form the architecture of The Z Object. Within this space, we can easily change our surroundings to better suit our timely needs with simple gestures like move, rotate, scale, and a 3D paintbrush. Being able to take on multiple identities that better represent ourselves and the spaces we occupy. In this state, the architecture is able to adapt to the rapidly changing zeitgeist of our contemporary world.

Alienation

Lawrence Yuan

Thesis Advisor: Casey Rehm

Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3jP7ZX6ZGs&t=8s&ab_channel=Lawrence_Yuan

Today, our bodies and social behaviors are penetrated by numbers, we are abstracted into data clusters on digital platforms to participate in social, economic, and political activities. When big data and cloud computing become the dominant rules, our control and knowledge over the digital environment are undermined. This “digital alienation” is the product of unequal power structures that intentionally deny users control, and this manipulation fits Marx’s definition of alienation as an estranged power system working against individuals.

Thus this thesis proposes an alternative solution that passes the value back to users, by leveraging the data in the unknowably large digital space, in order to respond against the objective conditions of non-control and non-ownership.Also, establishing a tool that allows architects and designers to intuitively navigate digital contents and utilize the latent space of neural networks, which is composed of the contributions of architectural designs from the internet and social media, to manipulate the outputs of alienated labor towards their design intentions.

Emotional Garden World

Yifan Wang

Thesis Advisor: Casey Rehm

Video Link: https://b23.tv/YOkCoU

The thesis is an aesthetic exercise on the disciplinary projects of the garden for Virtual Space. Trying to define new hybridity of nature and a synthetic landscape that contains within its existing flora and bizarre biosynthesis. By creating the flora which evolves not out of the aesthetic preferences of human (the traditional humanist garden) but out of the internal logic of a new code, the thesis wants to replace the process of human aesthetic selection with new thinking.

X City

Phoemphol Phoemphoolsinchai

Thesis Advisor: Elena Manferdini

Website: https://cityx.phoemphol.com/

How can architecture engage with agriculture while keeping up with changing smart technology to sustainably protect food supplies sufficient to feed everyone? The thesis explores the opportunity for architecture to combine with sustainable practices to produce a self-building and smart city and to provide a stable foundation for human life in a crisis like flooding, wildfire, or famine. The best way to start to reduce the impacts of thesis crises is to adjust human lifestyles through sustainable architecture. City X is a prototype for the architectural discipline to build a contemporary city with zero net impact. City X applieds nature to help nature by replying on plants to help filter or purify water. All innovations are adjusted to fit into the site surroundings, and the production will be created from the relationship between society and architecture as people participate in the construction of their city. City X is not a utopia but a real urban proposal when new ideas about city systems are tested or refined. This is Xiong'an. This is the future!

Perceptive Places

Yash Mehta

Thesis Advisor: Hernan Diaz Alonso

“Perceptive Places” is about accidental phantoms. The project explores facets of fakeness to embed places with dramatic unreal-reality. The project positions itself somewhere in between the plausible and the surreal; the present and the absent. Realism is defined as a constructed tension between reality and its representation. Architecture has always been positioned as conceptual or sensoria, abstract or real, but the project intervenes between desires; fakeness, and imagination. To imagine that the world is being led by a being that knows where we’re headed is completely unreal, but its absurdity is what makes it so real. The image of the world is carried through space by ancient, massive beasts is so evocative that it appears in so many different cultures. But where are they today?

Musée Kit-ology

Housheng(Jack) Wang

Thesis Advisor: Tom Wiscombe

This thesis project is a new LACMA museum proposal, which starts from the idea that the museum architecture is a cabinet of parts. The museum, from the cabinets of wonders to the modern gallery, was seen as “microcosms” of civilization's creation- it encapsulates and miniaturizes the world. Model kit is a collection, a set of parts, a curation- it’s a museum on an extremely small scale. The parts laid out and displayed in a kit, like treasures in a cornucopia, but they can also be assembled and point to a real thing. For an altered option for the new LACMA, the types were pulled out to become parts and be reassembled on the site. Parts are stacked, scaled, rotated, nested inside one another, and assembled into a super-figure facing Wilshire Boulevard. The project, itself a gigantic cabinet, contains the art of our time in inventive ways, and opens up to the city.

Mega-Ferriss In LA

Jiaoyue(Gia) Zhao & Deepak Agrawal

Thesis Advisor: Tom Wiscombe

Video Link:https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1rZ4y1V7CW

Hugh Ferriss's moody, mysterious dream towers were always strangely more appropriate to the film noir landscape of Los Angeles than they were ever at home in the infinite grid of New York. This thesis starts with a collection of Ferriss-inspired forms and silhouettes and proceeds to mine their as-yet unrealized potentials through various transformations -- copy, scale, rotate, slice -- before setting them down in LA.

Megaform as Urban Landscape II:

Machinescape - Skywallker Distribution Machine

Ziao Zhou(Post-Graduate-City Program)

Thesis Advisor: Thom Mayne

The project started with the problem of locating a ''food desert'' in Los Angeles, proposing to use the Southern Pacific Railroad's Piggyback yard at the junction of the Los Angeles River and the Alameda Passage to design a giant 'Food distribution machine' to solve ''food deserts'' by putting people within a half-mile walk of any Los Angeles County settlement where all have equal access to fresh produce. For 'The Food Distribution Machine' the designers have designed the entire distribution system from harvesting, storage, and distribution of food and its corresponding infrastructure with the intention of fully automating it. The highlight of this project is how it uses existing infrastructure networks to address food equality and how its design explores architectural typologies that challenge the post-human era.
