A World of Fresh and Green
by Xi She
A year ago today, the begonias at the cemetery were one-third blooming,
this year, all have withered.
“Cold spring last year, warmer this year,' people easily
explain the immanent reason.
Old sayings can’t be wrong —
The seasons turn, fresh green* returns, the diehard flower.
But people change: new graves crop up by old graves,
perhaps new regrets grow on old regrets?
Women wail a familiar wail, but when they weep,
you may catch something new in their sobs.
Something else is constant: People come and go,
water ebbs and flows, and the misty river whisks by the graveyard,
still so broad, still so nubilous
and refreshing. The river flows quietly, not looking to
distract those lighting incense or those in communion
with the souls on the other shore. Now and then
people lift their heads from the age-old ritual,
and many will cast a glance across the river.
The riparian marsh looks refreshingly green in the sun —
it is exactly this world of fresh and green
that revives our spirits: swallows clip the glittery water
as chock-full barges chug along, up and down the river.
