我们在做中到英翻译的时候，会发现中文里有些词出现的频率格外高，比如大家熟知的“中文发言三大宝”：发展、合作和促进。其实还有一个词用的也很多，我今天想重点聊一聊，这个词就是“影响”。“影响”不是什么难翻译的词，直接对应到英语里，大家脑海中第一个浮现出来的估计就是influence了。例如，“中国日益提升的影响力正在引起广泛关注”这句话就可以翻译为：China's ever growing influence is drawing widespread attention.不过，这是否意味着“影响”就一定要翻译为influence呢？我们来看这么两句话：专心工作，别受影响。 这家公司在疫情中几乎没受什么影响。这两句话中的“影响”还能翻译成influence吗？显然是不行的。那么influence究竟可以用于哪些场合？不同句子中的“影响”又能翻译成什么呢？
根据朗文词典的解释，influence的主要含义是：
也就是在不直接动用武力或发号施令的情况下，改变某人或某事发展、行为或思考的方式。 我们还可以说某人或某事是一个good influence或bad influence，这指的就是他们会带来好的影响或是坏的影响。此外，influence还有一些固定用法，比如说driving under the influence （DUI）酒后驾车、sphere of influence（势力范围）等等。总而言之，influence主要强调的是“影响力”，这种影响力可以是政治影响力、个人影响力或者是酒精和药物的影响力等等。回到刚开始的两个例子：专心工作，别受影响。 这家公司在疫情中几乎没受什么影响。这两句中的“影响”都和影响力没什么关系，我们可以分别翻译为：Focus on your work and don't get distracted.This company was barely affected in the pandemic.那么除此之外，“影响”还能翻译成什么呢？我们用例句来说话。
先看“影响”作名词的情况。 这篇文章很有影响。This article is making/producing a strong impact.这家公司的垮台会给整个行业造成负面影响。The collapse of the company will have repercussions for the whole industry.他在政坛颇有影响/他在政坛毫无影响。He is a political heavyweight/lightweight.他颇具外交影响力。He's got great diplomatic leverage. 经常锻炼对身体健康有直接影响。Regular exercise has a direct bearing on fitness and health.再看“影响”做动词的情况。美国总统不能影响美联储的工作。The US president shouldn't interfere with the work of the Fed Reserve.作为政客，他知道如何影响舆论。As a politician, he knows how to manipulate/shape public opinion.影响威信lower/undermine/undercut one's prestige影响产品质量impair the quality of products影响工程进度hold up the project影响人民的积极性chill/dampen people's enthusiasm别影响他做功课。Don't disturb him while he's doing his homework.灯光不好会影响舞台效果。Poor lighting will spoil the stage effect.这件事持续影响着整个金融界。Repercussions of the case continue to reverberate through the financial world.最后再来看两个常见的意思，“受影响”和“不受影响”。 有些植物容易受霜冻影响。Some plants are susceptible to frost damage.处于易受外界影响年龄段的儿童。children at an impressionable/malleable/pliable age别人的任何批评对他都毫无影响。He has become immune/impervious to any criticism.这家公司走出危机时几乎未受任何影响。This company has emerged from the crisis almost unscathed/unaffected.
